What is automatic manual transmission (AMT), working parts of automatic manual transmission, advantages of automatic manual transmission (AMT) 


1. What is Automatic manual transmission (AMT) :-

It is not an automated transmission and not a manual transmission, it is a combination of automatic and manual transmission. Some function of this system is works like manual transmission and some are works automatic. 

In other words - An Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) is a type of transmission used in vehicles that combines the features of both manual and automatic transmissions. It is also known as semi-automatic transmission or clutchless manual transmission.

2. Working parts of automatic manual transmission (AMT):-

It have some components which works together and achieve a function like AMT. The parts are mention below-

(a) Transmission control unit (TCU) :-

This is an electronic programmable device which control on transmission system. It is work like ECU, it have a computer chip which have some programing to control the vehicle's transmission system.

(b) Vehicle speed sensor:-

This sensor is connected with speedometer gauge. The sensor sends signal to TCU about vehicle speed. 

(c) Wheel speed sensor:-

This sensor fitted with the wheel. It sense the speed of wheel and sends signal to TCU.

(d) Yaw and Pitch sensor:-

Both sensors sense the vehicle's in tilt angle and gradient angle and sends signal to TCU.

(e) Gearbox input shaft speed sensor:-

This sensor sense the speed of gearbox input shaft and sends signal to the TCU.

(f) Electric Motor:-

This motor is controlled and operated by TCU. It helps to engage and disengage the gear automatically.

(g) Hydraulic Pump:-

This pump is also controlled by the TCU and it supply the hydraulic fluid to the accumulator when received a signal from the TCU.

(h) Hydraulic accumulator:-

This accumulator control on the flow of the fluid. In other words it make on / off the fluid pressure for the gear selector actuator. It is also controlled by the TCU.

3. Advantages of Automatic manual transmission (AMT):-

Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) offers several advantages that make it a popular choice in certain vehicles and driving conditions. Some of the key advantages of AMT include:


AMT is often more affordable than traditional automatic transmissions, making it a cost-effective option for manufacturers and consumers alike. It uses a simplified design compared to conventional automatic transmissions, resulting in lower production and maintenance costs.

Fuel Efficiency: 

AMT can enhance fuel efficiency, especially when compared to conventional automatic transmissions. It allows for precise and optimized gear shifts, which can lead to better fuel economy, particularly in stop-and-go traffic situations.

4. Dis-advantages of Automated Manual Transmissions:

Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) has its advantages, such as improved fuel efficiency and ease of driving in heavy traffic. However, it also has some disadvantages that should be considered:

Jerky Gear Shifts:

AMTs can sometimes produce jerky or abrupt gear shifts, especially during low-speed driving or when driving uphill. This is because the system relies on electronic control to engage the clutch and shift gears, which may not always be as smooth as a traditional automatic transmission.

Slower Response Times:

Compared to modern automatic transmissions or continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), AMTs can have slower response times. The electronic control may take a moment to engage the clutch and select the appropriate gear, resulting in a delay between the driver’s input and the actual gear change.

Limited Performance:

AMTs are not ideal for high-performance driving, as they may not shift as quickly or precisely as dual-clutch automatic transmissions or manual transmissions operated by skilled drivers.

Potential Maintenance Issues:

Some drivers may find it takes time to get used to the different characteristics of an AMT, especially if they are accustomed to driving with a traditional automatic or manual transmission.

Overall, while AMTs offer certain benefits, they may not be the ideal choice for all drivers or driving styles. It’s essential to consider these disadvantages and compare them to other transmission options before making a decision.
